Therapeutic yoga is designed specifically for individuals with an orthopedic and/or neurologic conditions, who need guidance to move in the presence of pain or fear/avoidance thinking.

This program may be particularly helpful for patients preparing for surgery who want to prevent or address deconditioning, as well as for those in the post-operative period working to safely return to activity despite pain or functional limitations.

The class will focus on:

• Gentle, accessible movement tailored to varying levels of mobility

• Breathing techniques to support nervous system regulation

• Postural awareness and stability

• Mindful movement strategies for strengthening and conditioning

The goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment that complements medical care and helps patients improve function focus on moving the needle towards the health direction of life. This is a structured, evidence-informed movement practice.

Nancy (Nan) Ball is a retired MD/physiatrist, who completed yoga teacher training in 2008 and has integrated daily yoga concepts and practices into her medical practice with Maine Neurosurgery and spine as a non-surgical spine specialist until her retirement in 2024. She has sought out additional training with Judith and Lizzie Lasater (the origins of Restorative Yoga) Donna Farhi (the Author of Pathways to a Centered Body and other well respected yoga training books), and others.

Nan is currently enrolled in a 500-hour YTT program and is passionate about using the tools of therapeutic yoga/a yoga therapy approach in addressing the challenges of the aging body, and any physical body that is slowed by a neurologic and/or orthopedic challenge.

We supply the following yoga props:  bolsters, blocks, straps, blankets, yoga tune up therapy balls and chairs.   Class size in limited to 8 people to support the nature of a Therapeutic Yoga class.
